Global Chest initiatives (GCI) is a registered charitable 501 c-3 organization headquartered in the state of Colorado,USA.
GCI has 2 main divisions: 1. International Asthma Services (IAS) 2. Global Cardiology Services (GCS)
Mission statement: Global Chest initiatives is established to improve the quality of life, education, treatment programs as well as the infrastructure mainly in the developing countries, for patients suffering from lung and cardiac problems.
IAS was started by Dr P.K.Vedanthan MD of Fort Collins, Colorado USA in 1987. Dr Vedanthan (Dr.PK) is an American board certified allergy and asthma specialist settled in Colorado since 1974. Dr PK was highly influenced by his visits to his native land of India of the urgent need to help the huge number of 'needy' asthmatics.
IAS is dedicated to: (1)to improve the over all care of the asthma patients around the globe (2) to educate patients, their families as well as motivated physicians (3) to facilitate technology transfer. IAS is active in India, Kenya,Myanmar, Fiji, Philippines, Mauritius, Argentina, as well as USA.
To conduct free asthma camps and distribute essential medications.
IAS has been conducting FREE asthma-allergy awareness camps since 1987. These are day camps where an average of 100 patients are evaluated, educated on a daily basis. such camps have been felicitated in cooperation with several service organizations like Rotary clubs,Lions clubs,hospitals, schools,churches, Philanthropic families, private clinics in different parts of the world.More than 300 camps have been conducted and several students of Dr PKV are continuing his example. Around 37000 patients have been served so far by our volunteers around the globe.
Locations of these camps are all over India (11states), Kenya, Mauritius, Myanmar, Philippines, Argentina, Fiji, USA, Saratov Russia.

To facilitate transfer of equipment and educational materials.
IAS has equipped several respiratory ICUs in India,Kenya as well as set up Respiratory centers with modern equipment in Saratov,Russia, Nairobi,Kenya, Mauritius,Fiji and several parts of India. This has enabled the health professionals to objectively evaluate the patients as well as do research studies.
To transfer educational materials and technology to needy community of various countries.
IAS has been educating health professionals since inception.Several hundred CMEs have been conducted in different locations of the globe.the first formal training program (Diploma allergy & Asthma( (DAA) in allergy & Asthma was set up at Christian Medical College-Hospital (www.cmch-vellore.edu) at Vellore, TN,India in 2006. through this program 1 year long distance program utilizing local, national and international faculty has been offered.Students hail from all parts of India as well as neighboring countries like Sri Lanka,Kenya, Rwanda,Indonesia as well as distant places in USA and Canada. 220 doctors have so far graduated.
IAS has been conducting 3-5 day intensive courses at University of Nairobi,Kenya, Myanmar (2014), Medical university of Saratov,Russia (2012).
Some of the Courses are endorsed by AAAAI as well as Center for Global health,University of Colorado,Denver,Colorado USA.
To serve the needy asthmatics in different parts of the world.
IAS has offered Free medications, educational materials as well as conducted public awareness talks thro media (TV,News papers, books, pamphlets). All these efforts are to increase the level of awareness of these common ailments. the latest move has been the formation of allergy-Asthma Network of India (AANI) (www.aani.in), a huge network of nearly 200 physicians who have all been trained by IAS at CMC, Vellore. These trained physicians carry the ideals of IAS and put them into practice in their communities.
